You have a rare collectible that also happens to be really fun, so I’d go for it. And it’s perfectly safe as long as you you use pressure-correct ammo. The barrel came off an original Winchester model 94 and has a nice looking bore with crisp sharp rifling and minimal wear considering its age. 25-35 Winchester with an internal magazine. The cartridge has pretty low recoil and won’t slap you around too much. It is a Springfield model 1898 Krag rifle that has been professionally customized and sporterized sometime during its life. 30-40 Krag isn’t cheap, but given its age and pristine-ness I shoot it maybe twice a year so it’s not an issue. Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Krag Model 1898 Rifle was made back in 1900 and still looks great.

The cleaning tools are in about Very Good Plus condition. The oiler is a Type 2 (see pages 183 to 186 of The American Krag Rifle and Carbine by Joe Poyer). There’s quite literally no other rifle like it, given its odd loading mechanism. The Type 5 cleaning rod has swelled joints and a swelled head.
I took a gamble by not going to a gunsmith to get it checked out before shooting this thing, but I’d definitely recommend it because these things are a lot of fun. I mean, if the rifle is in good working order and hasn’t been messed with by amateur gunsmithing over the years, it’s probably safe to shoot.
